Most moving-day problems are booking problems that surfaced late — a lift not reserved, a gate pass not issued, a truck that cannot reach the door. Work backwards from your move date and almost all of it disappears.
Three to four weeks before
- Fix your move date, and check it is not a society-restricted day.
- Get a survey done so the vehicle is sized to your goods, not guessed.
- Start decluttering — you pay to move volume, so anything you will not use again is wasted spend.
- Apply for the society NOC and book the service lift at both ends.
One week before
- Confirm the lift slot and gate timings in writing where you can
- Use up fridge and pantry items rather than transporting them
- Back up important documents and keep originals with you, not in a carton
- Tell your milk, gas, newspaper and maintenance contacts the change date
The day before
- Defrost and dry the refrigerator — at least 8 hours, or it leaks in transit
- Charge your phone and keep both movers’ numbers saved
- Pack an essentials bag: medicines, chargers, a change of clothes, basic tools
- Photograph the back of your TV and router so reconnection is quick
On moving day
- Walk each room with the crew before packing starts, and point out fragile items.
- Keep jewellery, cash and documents with you — reputable movers will not carry them.
- Check every room, balcony, loft and bathroom before the vehicle leaves.
- At the new home, direct cartons to the right rooms as they come in rather than sorting later.
