Transit Insurance and Damage Claims
Updated 2026-09-09 · Triveni Packers and Movers
Most people first read their moving paperwork after something breaks. That is the wrong order. The distinctions that decide whether a claim succeeds are settled before the vehicle is loaded, and they take about ten minutes to check.
The distinction that matters
There are two different things sold under the word insurance. One is a policy from a licensed insurer, where a declared value, a premium and written terms exist. The other is a liability clause in the mover’s own contract, which is a promise from the company rather than cover from an insurer.
Both can be legitimate. They are not equivalent, and the difference only becomes visible when you claim. Ask which you are being offered, and if it is a policy, ask who the insurer is.
Declared value decides the cover
- Cover is generally based on the total value you declare, so a low declaration means a low settlement
- The premium is normally a percentage of that declared value
- High-value items are often expected to be listed individually rather than folded into a total
- Jewellery, cash and documents are typically excluded, which is why reputable movers ask you to carry them yourself
Paperwork worth keeping
- The policy document or the written liability terms
- The mover’s invoice showing what was charged, including the insurance line
- The inventory or goods list prepared before loading
- Photographs of valuable and fragile items before packing
- Purchase receipts for expensive items where you still have them
The pre-move inventory does most of the work in a dispute. It establishes what was handed over and in what condition, which is exactly what a claim turns on.
At delivery
- Check the visibly fragile items first, while the crew is still present.
- Photograph any damage before you move or repair the item.
- Record it on the delivery paperwork rather than agreeing verbally.
- Report it to the company the same day, in writing.
- Keep the damaged item and its packing material until the claim is settled, since a surveyor may need to see both.
We prepare an inventory before loading and tell you plainly what is covered and what is not. Call 9010195555 and ask us to walk through it before you book.

FAQs
Is transit insurance included in the moving price?
Usually not by default. It is normally priced separately as a percentage of the value you declare, so the cover depends on the declared figure. If a quote mentions insurance without a declared value or a premium, ask exactly what is being offered.
What is the difference between insurance and the mover’s liability?
A policy is issued by an IRDAI-registered insurer and pays according to its terms. A liability clause is the moving company’s own promise, and it is only worth what that company chooses to honour. Ask which one you are getting, in writing.
What should I do if I find damage after delivery?
Photograph it before moving or repairing the item, note it on the delivery paperwork while the crew is still there, and report it immediately rather than after unpacking everything. Damage recorded at delivery is far easier to resolve than damage reported days later.
